Multicultural Council

  • The Council provides leadership and assists the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) to respond to the requirements for inclusion, diversity, and cultural competence as set forth in the Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act of 2000.
  • The Council supports AUCD to implement its Strategic Map with an emphasis on growing diverse and skilled leaders, and modeling diversity, equity, and inclusion with and on behalf of people with developmental disabilities and their families throughout the network.

 

 
 

The Council helps the AUCD network to

  • Ensure the meaningful participation of individuals from culturally diverse and underrepresented groups in all activities and across all levels of the Association.
  • Incorporate salient issues in public policy initiatives, at the national, state, and territorial levels that disproportionately impact individuals with developmental disabilities and their families from racially, ethnically, and culturally diverse groups.
  • Create professional development and learning opportunities for member programs that increase capacity and leadership for diversity, inclusion, equity, and cultural and linguistic competence.
  • Identify and broker partnerships with organizations and communities concerned with diversity, equity, and inclusion that are external to the AUCD network to effect systems change.
  • Inform the work of other AUCD Councils and assist them to incorporate diversity, equity, inclusion, and cultural and linguistic competence in their deliberations and activities.

 
 

Membership

The Council membership consists of one voting representative from a member program that is endorsed by the Director of the program including UCEDDs, IDDRCs and LENDs. The Council welcomes the participation of other individuals who are interested in advancing the vision, mission, and values of AUCD within the contexts of individuals at risk for and with developmental disabilities and their families from under-served populations and communities in the U.S. territories, and tribal nations.

AUCD's Andy Imparato Visits the Pacific

For the past ten days, AUCD Executive Director Andy Imparato has been visiting disability organizations and meetings in the South Pacific, hosted by Tafaimamao Lefu Tua Tupuola and Kiriko Takahashi of the American Samoa UCEDD (Ucedd Ascc). He has met with people with disabilities, families, and numerous staff working on disability issues throughout the South Pacific.

NH-ME LEND and New Mainers Public Health Initiative

An Interagency Parent Advocacy and Information Project

Over the past two decades, Maine has experienced a rapid growth of racially, ethnically and linguistically diverse populations. Although Maine's population is largely White (95%), children in Maine are disproportionately from minority populations; currently 9% of children in Maine are from a race other than White.

Waisman Center UCEDD and Community Partners Launch an Equity Action Lab in Rural Wisconsin

The Wisconsin Care Integration Initiative (WiCII) is a HRSA-funded project at the Waisman Center to improve systems of care for medically underserved families of children with or at risk for ASD/DD. In order to support community-driven solutions in this area, WiCII brought together parents, policymakers, and community and state leaders to participate in the "100 Million Healthier Lives States of Solutions" program. States of Solutions, which is funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and convened by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, provides high quality tools and consultation to advance health equity. The program is grounded in the principle that those most impacted by inequity should play a leading role in developing and implementing sustainable solutions.
