Multicultural Council

  • The Council provides leadership and assists the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) to respond to the requirements for inclusion, diversity, and cultural competence as set forth in the Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act of 2000.
  • The Council supports AUCD to implement its Strategic Map with an emphasis on growing diverse and skilled leaders, and modeling diversity, equity, and inclusion with and on behalf of people with developmental disabilities and their families throughout the network.

 

 
 

The Council helps the AUCD network to

  • Ensure the meaningful participation of individuals from culturally diverse and underrepresented groups in all activities and across all levels of the Association.
  • Incorporate salient issues in public policy initiatives, at the national, state, and territorial levels that disproportionately impact individuals with developmental disabilities and their families from racially, ethnically, and culturally diverse groups.
  • Create professional development and learning opportunities for member programs that increase capacity and leadership for diversity, inclusion, equity, and cultural and linguistic competence.
  • Identify and broker partnerships with organizations and communities concerned with diversity, equity, and inclusion that are external to the AUCD network to effect systems change.
  • Inform the work of other AUCD Councils and assist them to incorporate diversity, equity, inclusion, and cultural and linguistic competence in their deliberations and activities.

 
 

Membership

The Council membership consists of one voting representative from a member program that is endorsed by the Director of the program including UCEDDs, IDDRCs and LENDs. The Council welcomes the participation of other individuals who are interested in advancing the vision, mission, and values of AUCD within the contexts of individuals at risk for and with developmental disabilities and their families from under-served populations and communities in the U.S. territories, and tribal nations.

AUCD's Andy Imparato Visits the Pacific

For the past ten days, AUCD Executive Director Andy Imparato has been visiting disability organizations and meetings in the South Pacific, hosted by Tafaimamao Lefu Tua Tupuola and Kiriko Takahashi of the American Samoa UCEDD (Ucedd Ascc). He has met with people with disabilities, families, and numerous staff working on disability issues throughout the South Pacific.

Caregiver Voices: Cross-Cultural Input on Improving Access to Autism Services

This study used qualitative methods to gather family and provider perspectives of perceived barriers and facilitators to obtaining an ASD diagnosis and accessing ASD-related services for underserved families. Themes from focus groups and interviews with families from three cultural groups (black, Hispanic/Latino, and Korean) and three primary languages (English, Korean, and Spanish) highlight specific barriers related to family, community, and systemic challenges as well as facilitators to accessing care for these populations.

Developmental Milestone Video Broadcast in Rural Health Clinics (NV UCEDD/LEND)

The Rural Institute for Inclusive Communities has partnered with the Nevada Center for Excellence in Disabilities, Nevada LEND program and Good Health TV to share a developmental milestone video with parents and families.

AUCD Emerging Leaders Map 2019

"Centering People with Disabilities/Disabled People"

"Centering" means that PWD/DP are at the core of our work. It requires actively listening to and respecting people with disabilities/disabled people and their needs and wants within our communities. The Map highlights diverse trainees and early career leaders across AUCD's network. Each person was selected for inclusion on the map based on their contributions to the network, how they have demonstrated leadership, and their values and commitment to diversity, inclusion and respect for others.
